The second and final MotoE race of the Dutch Grand Prix at the TT Circuit Assen was the polar opposite of the outstanding show witnessed yesterday. After two delayed starts due to weather conditions, the encounter (declared wet by race direction) was first red flagged and then brought to an early end due to a crash involving Miquél Pons (LCR E-Team) and Marc Alcoba (OpenBank Aspar Team).
Pons had a highside at turn five and, just as he landed heavily on the asphalt, he was hit in the back by his fellow Spaniard’s Ego Corsa, as the #70 had no room to avoid him. The final classification was based upon the positions at the end of lap three, with Pons’s teammate Eric Granado coming out victorious ahead of Dominique Aegerter (Dynavolt IntactGP) and Mattia Casadei (Pons Racing 40), with only half the points awarded (12.5 for the Brazilian instead of the usual 25).
After four rounds of the series completed, Aegerter still leads the title race with 158 points, followed by Granado and Felo Gresini MotoE’s Matteo Ferrari (fourth today), 31.5 and 45.5 points in arrears, respectively.
The good news is that Pons was conscious and had full mobility after the incident, but was transported to a local hospital for further evaluation.
The 2022 FIM Enel MotoE World Cup will return to action on August 19-21 at the Red Bull Ring in Austria.
